Mixed One Person event?

AL POSTO DELL’OFFSHORE MIXED SE FOSSE BOCCIATO DAL CIO – Le classi Finn e Europa alleate in una submission a World Sailing per chiedere di valutare la loro proposta per una medaglia “di squadra” alle Olimpiadi che si correranno a Marsiglia. Il problema della quota atleti già ristretta (330)

La bocciatura della Medaglia Offshore in doppio misto per Parigi 2024 da parte del CIO sembra sempre più probabile, e di conseguenza si scatenano appetiti di ogni tipo. Se davvero come sembra la Medaglia d’altomare fosse (quantomeno) rinviata, a Parigi (Marsiglia) 2024 le discipline della vela resterebbero 9, quindi ne tornerebbe a disposizione una decima. Soluzione più semplice potrebbe essere quella di sdoppiare il Kite che attualmente è una medaglia “di squadra” con classifica formata dalla somma delle prestazioni di concorrenti maschili e femminili che compongono i team nazionali, e che tornerebbero ad assegnare distinti podi per i due generi (come le tavole IQ Foil).

Ma in giro stanno sorgendo varie proposte. Come quella che vede alleate due classi che già hanno vissuto stagioni olimpiche, due singoli chiaramente di genere diverso: il Finn maschile e l’Europa femminile. Per il primo, escluso dal 2024, Tokyo sarebbe l’ultima Olimpiade. Il secondo ha lasciato lo status olimpico dopo Atene 2004, sostituita dal Laser Radial da Pechino (Qingdao) 2008.

Le due classi hanno anticipato una submission a World Sailing nella quale chiedono di essere considerate per una medaglia mista a squadre (lo stesso sistema attualmente previsto e descritto per il Kite): Mixed One Person event. Note e ribadite le ragioni a supporto della proposta: da un lato il Finn resta l’unica possibilità olimpica per velisti che pesano più di 90 chili, altrimenti tagliati fuori, e dall’altra l’Europa è un singolo femminile con maggiori regolazioni tecniche rispetto al Laser Radial (oggi ILCA 6).

La palla è lanciata, il terreno sul quale rotola è accidentato e pieno di buche definitive. Il dubbio maggiore, o il punto debole della proposta, riguarda il numero di atleti previsto dal CIO per l’intero programma della vela 2024: tagliati di altri 20 posti rispetto a Tokyo (dove saranno 350), a Marsiglia i velisti saranno infatti solo 330. Sdoppiare un podio su due classi comporterebbe un ulteriore taglio alle quote di atleti qualificabili nelle altre nove discipline.

La submission potrebbe essere analizzata in prima analisi dal Mid Year Meeting di World Sailing in programma dal 10 al 14 maggio in riunione remota.

IL TESTO DELLA PRE-SUBMISSION - The International Finn Association and the International Europe Class Union would like to make a joint submission for the tenth event at the 2024 Olympic Games, should the Mixed Offshore Keelboat be rejected.

The proposed format would consist of a combined team score across a series of races. Team sports are common across the Olympics, so this is something the IOC and spectators can easily identify with. Both the Finn and Europe classes are well-established international classes with an extensive series of regattas worldwide, and a competitive number of boatbuilders conforming to anti-monopoly regulations, providing lower costs for MNAs around the globe.

In addition, they represent a tradition of sailors of different physiques that have written legendary pages in our beloved sport, a legacy worth protecting and whose loss could never be replaced. Sailing is one of the few sports that can cater for Men and Women of different physiques. Conscious of that responsibility, World Sailing rules have always guaranteed Olympic options for these sailors to continue a tradition dating back to the early years of sailing.

That same reason led the Council in 2017 to pledge that sailors with different physiques would have an opportunity to compete at the 2024 Olympic Sailing Competition (Submission 70-17). The inclusion of our Classes in the Olympic programme is the only solution that would permit heavyweight men and medium lightweight women to be competitive and enjoy our sport, while maintaining absolute gender and event equality across all ten events.

The Mixed One Person event would continue the tradition of providing a technical challenge to sailors at the Olympics, while catering for different sailor physiques and facilitating improved investment in female sailors around the world.

More importantly perhaps it would also keep many top sailors in Olympic sport that otherwise would give up after Tokyo as there would be nothing left for them to sail. The Finn class has unique links to the America’s Cup and plays a key role in a long held pathway through the sport. The Europe class is a previous Olympic class with many of the same technical qualities as the Finn and is still flourishing worldwide. That legacy must be maintained.
