Futuro incerto

A UN MESE DALL’ANNUNCIO DELLA LOCALITA’ DELLA PROSSIMA COPPA AMERICA – Grant Dalton, il capo di Team New Zealand, fa il punto su cosa è successo nei cinque mesi trascorsi dalla loro vittoria (7-3 contro Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli). E soprattutto su cosa potrà succedere

La lettera aperta di Grant Dalton aumenta le possibilità di vedere la prossima Coppa “difesa” dai kiwi lontano da kiwilandia. Ecco cosa scrive il capo del team velico più forte al mondo, a un mese dalla comunicazione ufficiale. Ecco le sue parole, a metà strada tra ultimo appello-speranza e anticipo di quanto più volte evocato, una Coppa lontano da casa per motivi finanziari...

“Oggi, 17 agosto 2021, esattamente a cinque mesi da quando abbiamo vinto la 36a America's Cup e ad appena un mese dal previsto annuncio della sede della 37a America's Cup, penso che sia un buon momento per un aggiornamento.

Ho sentito dire che: "Per Emirates Team New Zealand sarebbe meglio perdere la 37a America's Cup in Nuova Zelanda, piuttosto che vincerla su altri mari". Ovviamente questi sono commenti che provengono dall'esterno della squadra e forse da persone con una sorta di interesse acquisito. Trovo sorprendente che qualcuno si possa aspettare che una squadra come la nostra si prepari a perdere.

Avrete letto diverse settimane fa di un'offerta da parte di un investitore privato per aiutare finanziariamente il nostro team. Ad oggi, con il passare del tempo, ho avuto solo una conversazione con lui e nessuna proposta. Tutto ciò di cui siamo in possesso è un elaborato diagramma di flusso che mostra un complesso ma tipico affare di investment banking, attraverso il quale le tasse possono essere minimizzate mentre il denaro dell'investitore privato fluisce attraverso una società di sua proprietà e controllata. Questa struttura si basa anche sulla discutibile premessa che verrebbe utilizzato anche lo status del Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron come organizzazione senza fini di lucro. Emirates Team New Zealand e l'evento dell'America's Cup non avranno parte in nessuna di tali strutture fiscali e siamo anche estremamente preoccupati che il controllo sulla squadra e sull'evento alla fine spetti a investitori privati ​​che non hanno avuto alcun ruolo nei risultati dell'attuale squadra.

Nell'unica conversazione o comunicazione che ho avuto con questo investitore privato, egli ha espresso fiducia che il governo avrebbe aumentato in modo significativo il proprio contributo in denaro alla squadra e all'evento per la 37a America's Cup, ma non siamo stati a conoscenza di queste discussioni quindi non abbiamo alcuna conferma che ciò potrebbe accadere. Tuttavia, abbiamo già detto che, visto il clima attuale in cui tutti viviamo, abbiamo accettato che l'offerta del Governo e del Consiglio fosse definitiva e fatta in buona fede.

Dobbiamo sperare che ci sia ancora una possibilità (sebbene piccola) che in Nuova Zelanda si tenga una difesa di successo. Nell'ambito delle continue trattative, diverse settimane fa abbiamo fornito alla Corona una bozza di Host Venue Agreement (HVA) e siamo in attesa di feedback. Trovare i soldi per l'evento è cruciale, ma gli aspetti contrattuali dell'accettazione e dell'anticipo di quel denaro sono di uguale importanza.

Nel frattempo ci siamo occupati di analizzare i pro e i contro degli altri paesi selezionati. Abbiamo ricevuto un numero significativo di manifestazioni di interesse, che ora è stato ridotto a tre. Le maggiori opportunità che sembrano presentarsi consentiranno a Emirates Team New Zealand di trattenere tutto il personale chiave e di allestire una difesa vincente, oltre a migliorare il profilo della squadra di Coppa America di maggior successo nella storia. L'obiettivo è saldamente il "tre-peat", non è mai stato fatto prima.

Intanto la stesura del Protocollo prosegue a ritmo sostenuto. Insieme a The Challenger of Record possiamo promettere un protocollo innovativo che affronta la diversità nello sport, la sostenibilità, i giovani e il controllo dei costi per aiutare a migliorare i numeri di ingresso, ma questo è per un altro giorno.

Dal punto di vista del team, abbiamo completato una revisione molto ampia e dettagliata dell'ultima campagna. In effetti, la riflessione è stata ancora più approfondita rispetto a dopo la sconfitta di San Francisco. Potremmo chiederci, perché abbiamo vinto? E in realtà questa è la risposta, perché abbiamo vinto. Ripetere la campagna allo stesso modo è chiedere di essere battuti, le squadre non solo ci raggiungeranno ma di fatto ci supereranno. Tra le molte raccomandazioni c’è di continuare a spingere coraggiosamente in avanti i confini nel design, nell'innovazione e nelle prestazioni, è stata anche identificata la necessità di migliorare la nostra esperienza di Match Racing e nei prossimi tre anni ci aspettiamo di vederci più attivi in ​​quello spazio.

Quindi tieni d'occhio questo spazio (il sito del team e del RNZYS, ndr), tra non molto tempo la sede sarà annunciata, subito dopo il Protocollo che consentirà alle squadre di pianificare le loro strategie per cercare di vincere da noi il più antico trofeo dello sport internazionale.

So today, 17 August 2021 – being five months since we won the 36th Americas Cup and just one month from the Venue Announcement of the 37th America’s Cup – I think it’s a good time for an update.

I’ve heard it said that: ‘Emirates Team New Zealand would be better losing the 37th America’s Cup in New Zealand, than winning it offshore.’ Of course these are comments that come from outside the team and one expects from people with some sort of vested interest. I still find it astonishing that anyone would expect such a team as ours to set themselves up to lose.

You will have read several weeks ago of an offer by a private investor to financially help the team. To date, with time ticking, I have only had one conversation with him and no proposal. All that we are in possession of is an elaborate flow chart showing a complex but typical investment banking structured deal, through which tax can be minimised as the Crown and the private investor’s money flows through to a company owned and controlled by him. This structure is also based on the questionable premise that the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron’s status as a not-for-profit organisation would also be utilised. Emirates Team New Zealand and America’s Cup Event will have no part in any such tax structures and we are also extremely concerned that control over the team and the event would ultimately rest with private investors who have played no part in the achievements of the current team.

In the only conversation or communication I have had with this private investor he expressed confidence that the Government would significantly increase their cash contribution to the team and the event for the 37th America’s Cup, but we have not been privy to these discussions so have no view on whether that might happen. However, we have already said that given the current climate in which we all live, we accepted that the Government and Council’s offer was both final and made in good faith.

We need to remain hopeful that there is still a chance (albeit small), that a successful Defence is held in New Zealand.  As part of continuing negotiations we have provided a draft Host Venue Agreement (HVA) to the Crown several weeks ago and are awaiting feedback. Finding the money for the event is crucial but the contractual aspects of accepting and advancing that money is of equal importance.

In the meantime we have been busy analysing the pros and cons of the other shortlisted countries. We received a significant number of expressions of interest and that has now been narrowed to three. The expanded opportunities that appear to present themselves will enable Emirates Team New Zealand to retain all key personnel and mount a winnable defence as well as enhance the profile of the most successful America’s Cup team in history. The goal is firmly the ‘three-peat’, it has never been done before.

Meanwhile the Protocol drafting continues at pace. Along with The Challenger of Record we can promise an innovative Protocol which addresses diversity in the sport, sustainability, youth as well as cost control to help enhance entry numbers - but that’s for another day.

From a team’s perspective, we completed a very extensive and detailed review of the last campaign. In fact the way to think about it is that the review was even more thorough than after we lost in San Francisco. You may ask, why - you won?  And actually that’s the answer, because we won. To repeat the campaign the same way is asking to be beaten, teams will not only catch up but in fact pass us. Amongst many recommendations which included continuing to boldly push the boundaries in design, innovation and performance, also identified was a need to enhance our Match Racing experience and over the next three years expect to see us more active in that space.

So watch this space, not long now and the Venue will be announced, soon after the Protocol allowing teams to plan their strategies to try and win from us the oldest trophy in international sport.
